Great Smoky Mountain Dream

2008. 42″ x 37″

Strip-pieced landscape made from cotton fabric I dyed myself, plus some commercial cotton fabric (at the bottom); machine pieced, machine quilted using cotton and rayon threads.

In 2003 when I worked for child protective services, I remember once waiting to sign a petition in the bleak cube-farm which was the attorney general’s office, and the one beacon of any inspiration was a photo on a nature calendar of the Smoky Mountains: I asked the secretary if I could take that calendar page, and she said yes. I was really taken by the many layers of gray and blue mountains. It wasn’t until 2008 that I finally went to the Smoky Mountains for the first time. I still can’t stop thinking about how I can move there.
